Irchester Working Mens Club 20/7/2013- Investigation report

“Thanks for a great nite last nite some very good evidence on my first Ghost Hunt”

I knew that this venue was going to be active but I had no Idea just how active!

in a past investigation of the working mens club flat done privately a few months back we experienced footsteps in empty rooms and disorientation in certain team members. There was also rapping and good communications through the ghost box.

This time we were in the main building.

We started in the billiard room, probably the most active room in the house. After protection was laid down I called to any spirits present to interact with us and let themselves be known in any way possible. Almost straight away one of our more sceptical investigators began to feel unusually hot, (It was a hot evening, but a quick temperature check around him confirmed that area of the room was warmer then the ambient temperature.)

Next, barely a minute later, two of our guests in another part of the room felt pressure on their shoulders, as if someone was leaning between them to get a better look.

Then we noticed something more physical. The ceiling fan, which was turned off was moving in small, short jerks. The manager of the WMC confirmed that when it’s off it just doesn’t move like that, also if there was any power going through it, it would have swung in the opposite direction. This was very exciting as physical phenomena is quite rare at events of this nature, and it just proves you never know what you’ll get.

Moving on to the ghost box, we made contact with a spirit called “Andy” who was generally talkative, but didn’t give much more than yes/no/hello type responses. We were given a couple of other names as well, including “Neal” and “Wesley” both of which were names on a board of members in display at the main bar, we found out later.

A real highlight came during this section as “Andy” complained about the light, asking me to switch the torch off I was holding to illuminate the ghost box. I did this and put the torch on the table next to the box in the middle of the room. About 10 minutes later the torch switched on by itself! I asked the spirits to switch it off again and on once more, it complied both times! All this happened in the first hour and a half of the evening!

Next we went upstairs to one of the function rooms. I honestly didn’t expect to get much from this room, as if felt clinical and empty. However we heard rapping, knockings and footsteps where nobody was moving, and at one point we all clearly heard the emergency exit door catch rattle.

Using the Ouija board produced little movement in the glass, but several guests began to be affected with headaches, and at one point our psychic, Lynne Taylor had to leave quickly as she was having difficulty breathing! Lynne felt we had made contact with something unpleasant, so to be on the safe side we banished it.

A second attempt on the board later produced another interesting result. Looking at the reflection of the group around the Ouija board both myself and a guest counted seven people when there was in fact only six.

At midnight we moved into the main bar. Starting with the Ouija board, we were given the letters PAL. but nothing more. We couldn’t think of a name beginning with these letters, and so assumed he was just being friendly! However the manager informed us afterwards that the letters were actually the initials of a funeral directors that was on that site many years ago.

I then lead groups of four down into the cellar under the bar, were the ghost box produced the name “George”, apparently the staff nickname for the ghost there is also George, a fact I was unaware of at the beginning of the evening!

Finally we had a ghost box session in the main bar, and picked up lots of names of former club members- some who died recently! The staff of the club were on hand to validate each name, and even ask questions to confirm they were who they said they were. One staff member asked what music a certain member liked, and got a quick response of “Elvis” which happened to be the right answer!

All in all I feel that Irchester Working Mens Club is one of the best venues I have investigated to date, there was a strong flow of activity, and the spirits seemed to be happy to play with us and interact.

I want to give a big thank you to the club management for allowing me to hold the event, and hopefully we will be arranging another date there soon!

The Lamb Inn 22/6/13 Investigation report

lamb

This was the third investigation I hosted at the Lamb. It’s a nice little venue in a sleepy village just outside Wellingborough and it never fails to surprise me!

Despite advertising a “Light finger Buffet” Adam, the landlord treated us to a very filling meal of Sausage, Chips & two large plates of Sandwiches. There was so much food that there was leftovers at the end of the evening! A huge thank you to Adam for providing this off his own back!

Once everyone was fed and watered we got down to the investigation proper. As always, we began in the function room, that has seen a vast majority of the activity in my hunts. Although quiet to start we did get a significant amount of spikes on the K2 meter- although by the end there were so many hits on the K2 I began to suspect it was picking up something more terrestrial. I feel more investigation would be needed to verify this. Some of our more psychically inclined guests picked up a little girl who was setting off the meter, one person even got the name Sarah. Sarah has appeared on previous hunts, although this cannot count as scientific evidence as the details of that hunt are elsewhere in this blog.

We had a smashing ghost box session, with clear responses and defined personalities coming out. Although every investigation at the lamb draws out a different cast of characters. Maybe the Lamb is also a pub in the spirit world with many people going through. In any case the responses were very intelligent, one even commanded I sit down when I was standing up!

During the Ouija session I had a direct hit on the Trifield natural EM meter. Unlike the K2 this does not get set off by mobile phones or AC electricity. It will respond to the electrical field that humans will generate however, so it was fantastic to hear it spike when there was nothing nearby. It also coincided with one of the numerous K2 spikes, suggesting that something was passing through.

The Ouija itself made contact with an Italian soldier from WW2. Apparently there was an Italian POW camp in the area during the war. If this stands up historically it could prove interesting.

Although we did try some experiments in the main bar and secondary bar, we didn’t get much. I suspect this was not helped by the fact that a number of the Lambs clientele had chosen to remain after last orders and Make silly ghost noises as they communicated with a different kind of spirit. I will endeavour to try & ensure that this doesn’t happen in future events.

So all in all a very good evening was had. We got some interesting activity during the evening and I’m curious enough to go back again!

Our next investigation at the Lamb will be announced soon- watch this space!

Using a ghost box

image

A few people have been asking me about the ghost box, a radio like device that I have been using on my ghost hunts recently.
It is, in fact,a digital radio that has been “hacked” to do a couple of things a normal radio would not do.
Firstly as it scans through the AM or FM frequencies it doesn’t mute, allowing the listener to hear the airwaves in all their naked glory, & secondly it will not stop scanning once it finds a solid signal. The upshot of this is you hear a mish-mesh of white noise, static and broadcast transmissions. Its a little like listening to the shipping forecast on speed.
The theory is that ghosts & spirits have no voice of their own but can manipulate the ghost box to give the appropriate answer to any questions you may ask.
I know I was sceptical of this when I first heard of it- after all, you are obviously going to get clear words out of it when it is using existing radio stations. I often joke to people attending my ghost hunts not to be surprised if the ghost answers using David Camerons voice, (some may find that idea more scary!).
What is interesting, however,  is just how often the answers make sense.
When I first got my ghost box in the post I couldn’t wait to switch it on. We had experienced activity in our home including apparitions & poltergeist activity so knew if the ghost box was likely to work we’d get something straight away.
I felt very corny uttering the stereotypical, “is there anyone there?” But was surprised to get the immediate response of, “John”.
I pressed on asking if anyone was with them, the reply was immediate, “Ben”.
I then asked who was it that one of our guests had recently seen walking by the stairs wearing a beige cardigan. The answer was once again a very clear, “John”.
At this point my wife said, “yeah ok- switch it off now!”
Although not conclusive proof, it was enough to warrant further investigation. Either there were some amazing coincidences happening here or our ghost had appalling dress sense.

Since that day I have always began my ghost box sessions with control questions, that is clear questions to which there could only be one answer.
An obvious control question would be, “my name is Rob, can you say my name?”
Its great to hear the reply come through clearly & correctly! On good ghost box sessions in my commercial ghost hunts I’ve been able to persuade the spirit to say hello to everyone in the room individually!
Another good control question would be, “what do I have in my hand?” Providing you have something in your hand and there is a spirit in the room you should get a favourable response!
However if you continue to ask control questions, I find the intelligence you are communicating with will get weary, and even frustrated with it. After all, they didn’t sign up to be your personal lab rats!
Start to ask them about themselves and you will hear clear, distinctive personalities come through. I have had consistent personalities come out in venues from one hunt to another in the past! The voices won’t just be made up of the broadcast transmission either, often in a good session I have realised that the voice I was communicating with was the same one even though the ghost box had scanned many channels. Sometimes clear words are heard through the static itself.
You won’t always get perfect responses. At a recent investigation at a reputedly haunted cemetery, I didn’t get much from the ghost box. At one point an over familiar song came out, obviously paying on radio 1, that covers several frequencies so it made it hard for us to hear anything outside that pattern.
I do not know why ghost Boxs’ are hard to find on sale now. When I bought mine barely a few years ago there were a few to choose from on Ebay. Now, however, unless you want to buy from Singapore or pay the expensive American shipping costs you are out of luck. Occasionally a good second hand one will surface on Ebay, but it would appear that most UK suppliers have dried up.
There are a few options to the would be ghost hunter who wishes to try out a ghost box at a pinch however.
If you are ok with electronics & circuit boards you could have a go at hacking a digital radio yourself. The hack is relatively simple & a quick YouTube search will unearth countless instructional videos. The other option is to try some of the more reputable mobile phone apps. In all honesty I’ve never used them myself, however I’ve heard some good reports & they are a fraction of the cost of a ghost box so the risk is very low.
Over recent years I’ve come to regard my ghost box as one of the main pieces of equipment I use in my hunts. I’ve had some fantastic results from it & many clear conversations that have all but rendered the Ouija board obsolete.
I have no idea weather the intelligences I an communicating with are spirits, ethereal beings or aliens, (it has been suggested in the past by someone on one of my hunts) but I have no doubt that they are intelligent-whoever they are!
If you have an interest in paranormal investigation it is worth trying out & seeing the results for yourself. You may be surprised!

The Hind Hotel, Welingborough 20/10/2012- Investigation report.

This was the second investigation into the Hind Hotel, You can read about the first one here, and this time there were certain things I was looking for to achieve validation for our findings. As it happened I was not disappointed!

Before I tell you our findings I need to stress that apart from myself & one other, nobody else had attended the previous investigation, nor had I told them of our findings from that occasion.

First of all the location proved a lot more active on this occasion, with the EMF meter spiking on the slightest movement someone made, something it failed to do last time even with people jumping up at it! Although we never got any movement when everyone was still it made me feel quietly confident for the night we had ahead of us.

After some initial invocations that produced very little of note, we moved on to a short pendulum session. I had the pendulum suspended in the glass from the beginning of the evening and there was a few points it would start swinging even though nobody was near it. When I asked the entity that was pushing it to make it go faster it stopped mid-swing as if somebody had grabbed it, something that happened last time we were at the hind.

The Ghost box once more proved to be the star of the show, and this time I asked control questions, That we all knew the answer to, to make sure the answers we were getting weren’t random, but clear responses. Simple questions like “How many fingers am I holding up?” Got immediate answers, most of the time correct! And even when they got the answer wrong and I asked them t try again they were insistent that they were right. (we got a determined, “I said- TWO” even though I was holding up four fingers!)

Questions like, “what am I holding in my hand” got less clear responses. It did correctly identify a ring, but wasn’t able to recognise a key for example.

Last time we were in the Cromwell suite we started conversing with an entity calling himself “Jim” on the ghost box.

The main characteristic about Jim was last time he wasn’t happy with us being there, and kept telling us to go. He also wouldn’t let us speak to anyone else, preferring all the attention on him!

Jim appeared again this time, and showed similar characteristics, although this time he seemed in a better mood and did humour us with a little light conversation!

One of the most frightening  points of the evening occurred when I switched on the Ghost box for the first time and got a very clear, yet inhuman , “Shut up!” emit from it. I asked the entity to repeat itself, and got the same phrase, in the same voice instantaneously. This did not sound like the usual contact the ghost box makes. Rather than being compiled of broadcast transmissions it sounded like it had been constructed from white noise, static and interference.  This was one of the strongest cases of E.V.P. I had heard to date, although once it had said it’s piece decided to amble off and make way for more polite beings!

The Ouija board produced no perceivable movement on this occasion. And like last time I asked the sitters to try physically pushing the planchette, and found they had difficulty doing so, as if something was holding it in place, yet again on par with our last visit.

The automatic writing was very interesting. Even though the lady holding the pen was in a trance, the pen managed to move along a particular pattern perfectly several times.

Automatic writing

Automatic writing- The subject drew over the “V” shape perfectly several times before going into the rest of the work. She was in a deep trance.

On examining the final product of the automatic writing several members of the group identified the number 8 and an arrow pointing in a particular direction. we discovered if we followed the arrow out of the room it pointed to room 108.

On comparing it to the two examples of automatic writing we did on the previous visit, we found that 8 appeared in both drawings.

Around Midnight we moved to the restaurant. There have been many reports of happenings in this room and I was particularly interested to see what we found. One of the stories we had heard was there was a ghost of a little girl, who the staff left the light on for. The story goes that anyone who switches the light off would hear her crying.

We switched the light off and sat in darkness, but no crying was heard on this occasion, although one of our participants did feel sad, and had an urge to cry.

The Ghost Box picked up on someone calling himself “Eric”, and he informed us he was protecting the little girl.

Eric also told us he was a rifleman in the RAF. there have been reports of a soldier appearing at the Hind, so this was particularly noteworthy.

All in all we had a much more active visit the second time around, and I was pleased in our findings. I was really interested to see particular phenomena that matched up to previous visits, there were reports of people getting very cold arms or legs, or suddenly getting pins and needles. often the phenomena would happen in the same part of the room as last time as well, and affect people sitting in the same spot.

I will be looking at going back to the hind at some point early next year, so watch this space!

Sent in by one of our sitters, Anita Weekly.
A figure can be seen hovering on the beam above the light switch.

The figure blown up can be seen in more detail. It’s features appear in one other picture taken in a different part of the room.

Investigation report-The Lamb Inn 28/9/12

The Ouija board produced some amazing results!
(Photograph courtesy UK Haunted)

I was interested to see what we got at the Lamb, as there had been no investigations in this 16th century building in the past. The only history I was able to glean consisted of hearsay and friend of friend stories which patched together into an intriguing story, however nothing that could be supported by historical evidence.

However we began the evening in the function room to see what would happen.

As a side note, as I was preparing the room before participants arrived I decided to try out my EMF meter, and have a quick go on the ghost box. I picked up activity almost straight away, with voices on the ghost box quite eager to talk to me, and the needle of the EMF meter spiking on several occasions even though I was sat quite still in the room by myself!

We began the evening with an open invocation, calling out to the spirits to use whatever means to inform us of their presence. I never expect great results at this point of the evening and do it mainly to get the group used to the room and its natural noises. However the spirits had other ideas!

Some people reported feeling cold, particularly around their legs, even though the heating was fully on. Then my pendulum, that I had set up for later in the evening, began swinging by itself. upon seeing this I decided to move on to the pendulum straight away.

I have the pendulum suspended across a large wine glass, and have participants put their hands on the table with their fingers touching. I then ask the spirits to swing the pendulum and make it go in a circle. If we get good results I’ll ask it yes/no questions, with the pendulum swinging one way for yes and the other for no.

As it was responding so well on the night we got a clear conversation going. Answering anti-clockwise for yes and clockwise for no we found ourselves talking to a middle aged female who claimed she and her 3 children including a baby  died in a fire in the year 1909.*

She was confused, and didn’t know how the fire started, suggesting that the fire was at night and they were asleep. She also was unaware how much time has passed, claiming she had died in the last decade.

Moving on to the ghost box we found the ladies name was Anita. We were able to converse with her for a while, but she clearly didn’t want to talk about the fire and left us quite abruptly!

Another voice came through, adding that at that point there was “Just the one” spirit in the room.

He identified himself as “Dean” and claimed he was travelling form America and stayed at the Lamb in the 1960’s. Dean turned out to be one of the most talkative spirits of the evening, telling us about his travels around the world. though he wouldn’t tell us how he died.

Then the room got very busy, with the Ghost box spitting out various names, and calls of “Beer!” and even belches! It was like we were in a busy bar, or a raucous party! We had so many names and personalities calling out to us it became impossible to tell who was who, so we shut down the ghost box and moved onto the Ouija board.

We found the planchette moved quite quickly with one group of people, and managed to get names spelt out clearly. At one point it appeared a spirit had come through who was known personally to one of our sitters, but when I asked if it was just pretending the planchette moved to yes.

What was interesting about the Ouija board on this occasion was the planchette would only move if it was an all woman group. If any men put their fingers on it, it would immediately stop.

However one particular group of ladies had the planchette sweeping across the board so quickly it often got free from their grasp! On a couple of occasions the planchette tilted as well, with two of the feet lifting from the board completely. The main contact this time came from a child who claimed to be 5, who was more interested in playing with the planchette than talking to us!

We tried to do an invocation in darkness, but on this occasion it proved impossible as the lights outside, including a security lamp, made it quite easy to see, and so at midnight we moved down to the main building.

We started in the main bar, but found very little activity there, not much came from the ghost box, and the Ouija board proved inconclusive, however one of our participants produced a nice bit of automatic writing with the names “Lucy” and “Sean”(Or could it be Dean?) entwined within the pattern.

The back room proved more positive, and we got straight on with the Ouija board that had been working so well earlier. We used two men who hadn’t got any activity from the planchette so far and one of them almost immediately began to feel dizzy & disorientated and had to sit down.

When we put the girls back on we got a different child, four years old called Sarah. Sarah entertained us for a while, hiding under tables and tapping people on the leg. She was wary of strangers but quickly seemed to warm to us, and told us she used to live in the village, but didn’t have any connection with the pub.

For me Sarah was the highlight of the evening!

My overall feeling was that there are definitely parts of the building that warrant further investigation, and I will be coming back in the new year. the spirits we encountered felt very positive and  eager to talk, possibly because nobody had tried in the past. There was little ill will aimed at us and everyone left feeling good about the experience!

*Later in the evening I asked the landlord if he knew of a fire, he didn’t, but said that the roof of the building had been thatched many years ago. maybe one for the historians to work out!

The Hind Ghost Hunt report

It was somewhat frustrating that in a summer that consisted of some of the worst weather imaginable I was going to be spending one of the hottest evenings of the year inside.

However the vigil kicked off at 9 pm in an attempt to make contact with any of the spirits that resided there.

When I first visited the Cromwell Suite a little over a month before I got the feeling that something didn’t want me there. The Trifield Natural EM meter I was using at the time showed 2.5 initially, but minutes later the needle moved to zero.  As the meter detects change in the electro-magnetic fields you would expect it to go down, however nothing we did could get the needle to move. Even moving around near it produced no result, (Normally it does) and we tested the battery- it was fine!

It was as if something was holding the needle and saying, “Move along, nothing to see here!”

That trend continued on Saturday.

It wasn’t that nothing happened, rather that  something was trying to prevent things from happening.

One of the first things we did was suspend a pendulum over a large wine glass and asked the spirits to move it, and make it swing from side to side while four or five participants concentrated their energies on it. There was a few times it would start swinging, but when it stopped it stopped suddenly, as if some invisible force was grabbing it and preventing it from moving. We did however manage to get a yes/no system going and the responses we got suggested to us that we were talking to a male spirit who had been with spirit for over 300 years.

This entity was quite mischievous in his answers, and I got the impression he was listening to ideas put forward by the participants and telling us what we wanted to hear rather than the facts.

Two “Orbs” appeared in a photograph taken during the pendulum session. An identical picture taken seconds earlier showed nothing. (Many thanks to Andrea Taylor for the Photograph)

However we pressed on to using a device called a ghost box, this little toy was easily the star of the night, and we had 3 sessions with it at different points throughout the vigil. An all 3 occasions the same information came through.

For those who don’t know, a ghost box is a digital radio that has been modified to constantly scan through the radio transmissions on the FM or AM band. You hear the whole thing including random words as it scans through various radio programmes. At three different points of the evening, and using both bands in alternating sessions we got the same information. We got the name “Jim” many times and “Jim” was imploring us to “Leave”, “Just Leave” and “Go, go, go”. The answers seemed very consistent with the questions, When asked how many spirits were in the room, “Jim” said, “11” although he was reluctant to share the limelight with them, He named “Mike” but when we asked to speak with him “Jim” declared, “He cannot”.  At a later ghost box session we heard a female voice come through, we asked her name and got “Sharon” but before we could ask any further questions “Jim” came back like a grumpy landlord at last orders, “Go,Go,Go!”

The ghost box technically shouldn’t have the capacity to stop scanning, however in my experience it does sometimes freeze on vigils. On the first ghost box session it stopped scanning almost immediately, following in the pattern of someone trying to hide evidence. On later sessions it stopped on demand, when I asked the spirits to make the radio freeze it did so almost immediately. We also noted it stopped on the frequency 1600 suggesting a civil war connection and tying in to being dead over 300 years. When the spirit was asked how long it had been here we got a clear scentence, “Since about 5.30” and as we were laughing at this it froze once more, this time on the frequency 530.

The Ouija board was not a great success on this occasion, with the planchette stubbornly refusing to move and at times it seemed to be stuck even when I asked the participants to try and push it! after nearly 45 minutes however we got a couple of random letters followed by a clear movement to goodbye. This happened several times.

The evening closed with a dark vigil. where we switched off the lights and invited the spirits to do their worst. Several people saw shadows moving around, there were reports of people feeling tickled and tapped, at one point the ambient light coming from street lights beyond the closed curtains seemed to dim to almost total blackness. This was experienced by almost everyone.

In the end I would call the evening a successful failure, something was certainly happening but it seemed to be wanting to hide all evidence of its existence from us.

The next Hind Ghost vigil will be happening in October, a little closer to Halloween, I will be interested to see if the spirits are keener to talk then!

Introducing: The Deck of Shadows!

A few weeks ago I attended a meeting of mages, necromancers and other practitioners of the dark craft that I indulge so much of my passions in.

Such meetings are a great way to network, catch up with friends and share new ideas in the workings of the art, and I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend.

I always set myself a rule not to buy anything that I will not use, (no matter how pretty or attractive it may seem, the last thing the wife needs is another “Unusual” conversation piece to explain away in the living room!)

So when I saw the deck of shadows on one of the stalls I barely gave it a second look. After all, it was just another deck of oracle cards and I have loads of them. It was in one of those nasty little net bags that I hate so much- they rip so easily in the pocket!

It wasn’t even a respectable size- no bigger than a deck of common or garden playing cards! However that is the only time I will use the word “common” in respect to them!*

A little while later I was talking to the man running the stall, a man who I have a lot of respect for in the field- Dr. Todd Landman. We spoke of various routines and techniques and tools, and the conversation turned to psychic readings.

A few years ago Todd produced some amazing cards based around the Rorschach ink blot tests of the late 19th century. I was complimenting him of these cards and telling him how I used them in my psychic readings. Dr. Todd smiled and asked me, “If you liked them, have you seen the deck of shadows?”

Well not wishing to appear rude, I smiled politely while he reached for a deck and proceeded to open them and show me the cards themselves. At first glance the black and white imagery does not leap out, it has to be said. But this little deck doesn’t need to brag.

Each card has one key word and three secondary words to have meanings  in four directions if the user so wishes. The centre of the card displays a piece of classic art that reflects the words surrounding it, and at the top there is a playing card value. For those of us that know how to read playing cards, you will observe a lot of care has been taken to line up the right card value with the right image. To round everything off there is a different symbol at the bottom of each card.

There are 54 cards in all- the 52 standard cards, a “Yes” card and a “no” card. The latter two would be great on their own to work a pendulum reading!

One of the things I look for in a tool of divination is something that will “Speak” clearly to the reader, with a new meaning every time you look at them. This deck seems to achieve just that. I love the fact that I am still discovering new aspects and probably will continue to do so for some time yet.

The deck comes with a booklet that contains a description of each card and suggested spreads. It has to be said I seldom do more than flick through the book, preferring to get to know the cards in my own way and work in a style that seems right to me, however the book does make good reading.

The thing I love about these cards is that I was able to read with them right away- I was working with them on Psychic World TV the Monday after the meeting, and the answers practically leaped from the cards at me. A lot of the time I was able to do a full reading only using one card, however recently I have been using a three card spread.

The first card answers the question, “Where am I?”  and looks at where you are at philosophically speaking, the situation before you at the moment.

The second card looks at what action is needed to improve and progress the situation forward.

The third card will show the person having the reading what is around them to help them achieve the action described in the second card.

I have found this spread will answer most questions effectively, but as always would urge the user to discover their own spreads and work in their own way!

The Deck of Shadows is an amazing deck and I am delighted that Todd introduced me to them. He was selling them on behalf of a gentleman named Scott Grossberg, who was kind enough to allow me to use them on television.

I will say that these cards, while not the most flamboyant in the world,  have the ability to surprise, and impress. and being the size they are makes them easy to have on your person if you are put on the spot to do an impromptu reading!

If you are a reader and interested in getting your own deck of shadows they can be bought from this link (I’m not getting anything from Scott for doing this, I just believe in giving credit where it’s due.)

*Well- and also here, but that can’t be helped!
